Online Abuse and Taking a Stand
For those of you who were online yesterday morning you were confronted with something very ugly and disturbing. A couple of sick individuals thought it would be funny to come onto a family friendly Minecraft server and hurl racial and sexual abuse at players of all ages.
Our plugin that was supposed to block this failed miserably (Swear Filter), and because of this, users were subjected to seeing profanity and other horrific bullying language for the better part of an hour. Worse yet, there wasn’t a single staff member online.
I cannot apologize enough for this and I assure you that I am completely reexamining our entire staff situation and other ways to prevent something like this from occurring again. I appreciate each and every one of you who contacted me and let me know about this incident.
It was two users: tannerthebob and creeperkeeper345 from the IP 126.96.36.199. Both users have been banned as well as their IP address.
Furthermore, I have turned this over to their ISP Brighthouse Networks and they are currently investigating this matter.
Normally server owners just ban the offenders and sweep it under the rug. I know I have in the past. But I’ve decided it’s time to take a stand. I’m armed with their IP address and their ISP knows exactly who they are. In 2013 it’s time to put an end to hate speech. And if it takes public shaming, let’s do it.
Using the N word and other sexually charged and profane language with the intent to hurt isn’t free speech: it’s a crime. I’m going to stay on this until it comes to a resolution.
This is a teachable moment and a reminder to us all: we all live together on this planet. There is no room for intolerance, hate, or bullying. We don’t tolerate it on Towncraft and we’re doing something about it.
