Towncraft: The Story – Part 2
And so it was the following morning that the summons went out that all the people of Towncraft were to assemble outside the gates of the Ivory Tower for important news. As the sun rose and glinted off the impossibly smooth and shiny surface of the Ivory Tower, a sea of humanity washed its way through the streets to the capitol.
This was by far the absolute worst moment in Eli’s life. As Head Administrator, he had been tasked with delivering the terrible news. The thought that he was about to walk out to that podium and tell the entire world that everything they’ve known is about to get wiped out made his chest tighten. As he shuffled through his prepared statement cards, Eli passed a look back at Kolgrath and Torrenz, searching for reassurance.
“We’re behind you, Eli.” Kolgrath smiled and nodded.
“Yeah, mate. We’ll rebuild in no time,” Torrenz added.
That was all Eli needed. With a exhale Eli turned for that solitary march to the microphone. He looked out at all the faces in the crowd. Some faces covered in touches of flour, having come fresh from the ovens of the bakery. Others with the daily dirt from tilling the fields. The fishermen were here, poles still in hand. The blacksmiths were here, faces still dripping sweat from the heat of the forge. Life had come to a stand still in Towncraft, and after what Eli was about to say, it was going to be some time before it went back to any resemblance of normal.
“My fellow Towncrafters,” Eli paused a moment as the sound of his amplified voice echoed off the buildings along the Ivory Tower’s mall. Those words, usually said during times of great joy, had a whole different feeling now. This was something different, and Eli felt different. We’re all in this together, he thought. Eli cleared his throat.
“No. My brothers and sisters,” those were the right words he was looking for.
“It is with a heavy heart that I address you today,” again a pause. As those words rippled over the crowd, a low murmur of concern could be heard.
“A few days ago, the fine folks at TASA received an alert from our Intrusion Detection System. Upon research, the scientists discovered that a very large asteroid approximately 4,800 kilometers in diameter on a collision course with our planet,” stunned silence from the mass of people gathered as Eli swapped to the next card.
“During that time we have weighed every option to avert this disaster. We do not have the capability to stop a force so large. We need to evacuate the planet,” cries went out and the crowd began to console one another as the news sunk in.
“We have the plans to build starships to take all of us to a new planet. Kolgrath will be leading a small exploratory force to locate and prepare a safe place for us to start anew,” Eli looked over to Kolgrath. Kolgrath gave a salute to the people gathered before them.
The exploratory team was comprised of 5 members in addition to Kolgrath. Reznovski, Mr. Kiwi, General Gabriel, Quilt Jack, and Philcraft were selected from a pool of former moon colony veterans who knew what it took to start from scratch and survive on a new landscape.
“They leave tonight. With them rides our hopes for salvation. I know they’ll be successful,” Eli glanced over to Kolgrath again. No pressure, Kolgrath thought.
“I need every man, woman, and child to do everything and anything they can to help in the coming days. Anyone who can lift a tool, pack a crate, or run a machine will be called on to serve as we make preparations to evacuate,” Eli looked up from his notes as shouts began to come from the gathering.
“You can count on me, Eli!” shouted a young lady named Modeltay.
“Whatever I can do, I’ll do!” came another shout from Vortexdavid.
“For Towncraft!” yelled out Ahsen, a battle cry that ignited throughout the crowd like wildfire.
